Kindling Sparks of Slovene Digital Art

The lighting of bonfires on the day of the summer solstice was symbolically linked to sun worship in pagan tradition, and our ancestors believed in the miraculous and mystical powers of fire to enlighten, connect and awaken new life. This time, we set up a
Kres (bonfire) to awaken and bring out the hidden visions of Slovenia's emerging digital art from the underground and to bring together younger artists who have a unique relationship with virtual worlds around the hearth.
Despite working in different media and exploring different topics, the artists in the exhibition are connected by the fact that their artistic practices are inextricably linked to the internet and digital spaces. The younger generations' attachment to screens has shaped their specific understanding and vision of the world while influencing different ways of interacting and building relationships with each other. The flames of the bonfire illuminate works ranging from 3D animations, experimental videogames, and immersive environments to interactive websites and speculative design. The construction of alternative worlds, narratives and characters in digital environments allows the artists to reflect on the possible alternative systems that go beyond traditional societal norms while maintaining a critical approach to current social, political, ecological and technological issues.
The exhibition is a development of the
Kres online pavilion, created by Sara Bezovšek and Dorijan Šiško, and in its present iteration, it tests the possibilities of bringing the online exhibition into physical space. The outlines of experimental artistic approaches, characterised by the development of specific aesthetics, the creation of ambient speculative environments, the exploration of the boundaries between physical and virtual spaces, the construction of new characters, the questioning of the relationship to corporeality, and the fascination with the technical possibilities of different media, are thus beginning to emerge from the shadows. Between visions of the future and the mystical otherworld, a new community of artists is beginning to form and connect with
Kres, while igniting new sparks of Slovenian digital art.
